The Governance and Economic Development (GED) Program is a pathway to advance leadership excellence in the public sector, promote responsible governance and to develop more effective public leaders who will address the complex governance and economic development challenges of the African continent.

Designed exclusively for African legislators, key cabinet members and other elected officials who are genuinely committed to the economic development of their constituencies and would like to make a positive impact by facilitating foreign direct investment (FDI) and international assistance to their communities.

Powered by the Center for International Trade Development (CITD) – Miami in partnership with the University of Miami (UM) Herbert Business School and the World Strategic Forum, the GED program offers African Legislators an opportunity to expand their regional and global influence, improve their leadership capabilities, develop effective public policies, build skills to advance their political careers and access resources to address social and economic challenges in their constituencies.

Scheduled to hold in-person in Miami, Florida.

Program Features
The five-day high-impact GED program is comprised of the following key components:
Two-day participation at the World Strategic Forum offering global connection opportunities with world leaders, policy makers and industry specialists
Executive-level seminar on Governance and Leadership at the University of Miami delivered by world-class faculty and political leaders
Experiential session on economic development programs with various Economic Development organizations including facility tours
One-on-One engagement sessions with investors, financial institutions, businesses, and philanthropic non-profit organizations.
Exclusive networking reception with local politicians and U.S. Congress persons
Access to CITD-Miami’s follow up program to ensure FDI and Assistance commitments are fulfilled
Automatic enrollment in CITD-Miami’s Investment Promotion program

Who Should Attend and Why?

Currently serving African legislators at the state level or federal level in both upper and lower chambers of the legislature, cabinet members and other elected officials who are driven by the desire to govern responsibly and deliver greater value to their local communities.

The program is appropriate for congress men and women interested in building global connections, strengthening leadership skills, and enhancing legislative performance.

During the program, lawmakers will have the opportunity to share the immediate needs of their constituencies with investors and non-profit organizations undertaking philanthropic projects around the world to help bring solutions to their local communities and attract foreign direct investments.

Application Requirements

All active lawmakers (Senators and House of Representative members) from Africa are eligible to apply (Application does not guarantee admission). A selection committee will evaluate the merit of each application.
This is an intensive five-day program. All applicants must be willing to commit their time to go through the entire program schedule and must be able to adhere to the rules and regulations of the program.
Attach your resume and a one-page summary of your achievements in parliament so far describing the impact of your policies and programs on your constituency.
Attach another one-page summary of the current needs of your constituency as well as the FDI opportunities available in your local community. Describe government enabled incentives for investors and the structures in place to support their investments.
Expected number of participants per cohort is maximum of 40. Application deadline for 2022 program is October 15th, 2022.
